Orthodontic Braces

Orthodontic treatment is achieved by fitting braces that gradually correct the position of the teeth. There are different types of brace, the most common of which are removable braces and fixed braces.

Removable braces are used in simpler cases. They are comprised of a plastic plate, moulded to fit the inside of the mouth, with wires attached that gently push the teeth into position.

Fixed braces are used in more complex cases, where more accurate guidance is required. They are glued directly to the teeth and comprised of square brackets attached to most of the teeth, steel rings fitted around the back teeth and a connecting wire that gently pushes the teeth into position.

After the "active" phase of orthodontic treatment has finished, a retainer is worn to keep the teeth in position while the gums and jaw bone settle. Retainers are comprised of a plastic plate, moulded to fit the inside of the mouth, with wires attached that gently hold the teeth in position.

We offer a choice of treatment options, depending on each patient’s particular case, including discrete fixed braces, the latest free-sliding In-Ovation C fixed brace technology and invisible ClearStep™ aligners for private patients.

You can find out more about each type of brace and download an information leaflet by looking in the Removable Braces, Fixed Braces, Retainers and Invisible Braces sections.

If you are having a problem with your brace, please look in the Problems With Braces section for a solution.

You will find the answers to some common questions about orthodontic treatment on the About Orthodontics page.
