Retainer Problems
During the first 3-5 days after having the retainer fitted or adjusted, it is common to experience one or more of the following:
-
Slight discomfort in the teeth and gums. If necessary, painkillers, like those you normally take for a headache, may help (be sure to follow the instructions). If a particular area becomes sore, phone us for an appointment as soon as possible. If you can, keep wearing the retainer, otherwise you will have to repeat the initial discomfort when you start again.
-
Difficulty speaking. If you practice speaking with the retainer in place (e.g. by reading aloud) your speech will return to normal in a few days.
-
Increased salivation. You may find yourself swallowing more frequently; this is normal and will soon pass.
In case of severe or persistent problems with retainers, please phone the clinic immediately so that we can provide advice and, if necessary, arrange an emergency appointment. Outside surgery hours, please listen to the recorded message and follow the instructions.
You will find advice for some common problems here. If you have a problem that is not dealt with below please do not hesitate to contact us.
My retainer feels too tight
My retainer feels too loose or will not stay in
I have lost my retainer
My retainer has broken
My retainer is stuck in my mouth
My retainer smells funny
A feeling of tightness is normal at first but if it persists for more than a week please phone us as soon as possible.
My retainer feels too loose or will not stay in
Please phone us as soon as possible and if you can, keep wearing the retainer.
Please phone us immediately so we can arrange for a replacement. Please also note that the NHS charge for replacement retainers.
If the damage is minor and the retainer is still wearable, keep wearing it and phone us for an appointment. If it is badly broken or you are unable to wear it, keep the retainer in its box and phone us for an appointment. Do not wait until your next appointment as the breakage will delay your treatment and may result in damage to your teeth. We will always try to repair the retainer but if this is not possible, please note that the NHS charge for replacement retainers. If you repeatedly break your brace, your treatment may be stopped.
My retainer is stuck in my mouth
Please contact us immediately for an emergency appointment. If the clinic is closed, please listen to the recorded message and follow the instructions.
You should clean the retainer gently every time you brush your teeth. If you find regular cleaning is not enough to prevent odour, you can use Retainer Brite tablets (available at reception) to keep the retainer smelling fresh.
